Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

Kafka on the Shore displays Haruki Murakami at his brilliant, surreal best. The novel follows the fortunes of two remarkable characters: Kafka Tamura, a fifteen-year-old boy who runs away from his Tokyo home to escape an awful Oedipal prophecy and to search for his long-lost mother and sister; and Nakata, an aging simpleton who suffered a strange childhood accident and has never learned to read or write, but who has discovered he can communicate with cats.

As their paths converge on a magical journey toward a private library in Takamatsu, the narrative shifts between their parallel stories. Murakami weaves a magnificent tapestry populated by fish dropping from the sky, a mysterious entrance stone that opens up an alternate reality, and ghosts who take the form of pop icons. A profound exploration of fate, memory, and the power of literature, Kafka on the Shore remains one of the absolute masterpieces of modern magical realism.
