After Dark by Haruki Murakami

Set in metropolitan Tokyo over the course of a single night, Haruki Murakami’s After Dark is a masterfully distilled narrative of late-night encounters, loneliness, and deep psychological insight. The story unfolds between the hours of midnight and 6 AM, weaving together the lives of diverse characters who inhabit the city’s nocturnal underworld.

At the center are two estranged sisters: Eri, a beautiful fashion model who has fallen into a deep, mysterious sleep for months, and Mari, a young student reading quietly in a late-night Denny’s. Mari’s night takes a sharp turn when she crosses paths with a jazz trombonist, a resilient love hotel manager, and a brutalized Chinese prostitute. Meanwhile, a silent, surreal television screen in Eri’s room begins to pulse with a life of its own. Blending general fiction with jazz-infused fantasy elements, Murakami paints an unforgettable portrait of human connection in the dark hours.
