Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami

Sputnik Sweetheart is a masterfully crafted novel by Haruki Murakami that tells the story of a triangular love entanglement wrapped in a surreal psychological mystery. The narrative revolves around K, a young primary school teacher who is deeply in love with his best friend, Sumire. Sumire, an aspiring and eccentric young novelist, instead falls desperately in love with Miu, a glamorous and sophisticated older businesswoman.

When Miu invites Sumire on a business trip to a remote and quiet Greek island, Sumire suddenly vanishes without a trace, leaving behind only her unfinished writings. K receives a frantic call from Miu and rushes to Greece to help solve the mystery. As K delves into Sumire’s private journals, the boundary between the conscious mind and the dream world begins to dissolve. Murakami weaves a beautiful, jazz-infused parable of human isolation, comparing our lonely souls to the forgotten Sputnik satellites drifting endlessly through the dark void of space.
